Ding! The school bell rang. Abby couldn’t wait to get out of school. Her best friend, Liz, was in a different 5th grade class this year so it was kind of a bummer. They’ve been in the same class every year until now. But at least they were next door neighbors so they could play whenever they want. Abby scrambled into the hallway to get her backpack. She slipped one strap onto her shoulder and grabbed her mail. As she rushed out to the buses her brown wavy, hair trailed behind her. Once Abby had sit down in her seat she couldn’t see Liz’s luscious red hair anywhere. Abby darted around the bus desperately looking for Liz. Liz was nowhere. She sat gloomily back down in her seat. The rest of the ride home she felt down in the dumps until she saw Liz and Liz’s parents talking by the door. And wait… it couldn’t be. Her parents were over there too! Abby sprinted over to Liz’s house as fast as she could. Liz had a worried and sad look on her face. Abby was afraid to find out what it was about. It looked like her parents were trying to sooth Liz.
“What? Your moving!?” I sort of blurted that one out. How could it be? Liz and I have been best friends since kindergarten.
“Why and where are you moving?!” Liz stood there looking at the floor and finally said trying to hold in tears.
“We’re moving to California because my Dad’s business is moving and they want him to come with.” Abby pushed everyone out of her way, tears flying everywhere as she raced to the door and slammed it behind her. And that was the last time she saw Liz, that day at least. Abby lay in bed thinking about how her life would change after Liz left. She gazed out her window into the blackening sky. She just had to think of a way to keep their friendship together. But her Mom always said “ You can’t run away from your fears.” That’s it! Liz and I will runaway together! Abby packed a small bag with food, five T-shirts, 5 long sleeve T-shirts, her favorite pair of fluffy pink p.js, 2 pairs of underwear, 3 pairs of pants and socks, and 4 water bottles. She figured she could wash her clothes in the river so she brought a bar of soap and all the money in her piggy bank. She put on a T-shirt and some jean shorts and she was off to get Liz. She tip toed down the hallway and to the stairs. She stepped onto the first step and it started to creak. She looked left and right to see if anybody heard her. Nobody was awake so she carried on. This time she skipped one step and went to the next until she got downstairs.
To be continued.
